Nurse Assistant/Aide (CNA)

Nurse Aides assist in the care for the ill or injured by providing basic nursing skills and personal care.  Nurse Aides perform patient care under the supervision of registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses.  They have a broad range of duties including bathing, walking, feeding patients, making beds, assisting patients in and out of bed, dressing, helping patients with range of motion and activities of daily living.  They may provide skin care and observe patient’s physical, mental and emotional well-being.  Frank Phillips College’s curriculum is approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services to teach the skills necessary for work in a long-term care facility, hospitals,  and home health agencies   Instruction includes lecture, lab and clinical training in an approved facility.  Students must be over 16 years of age, be able to read, write and speak English. 

This course will prepare the student to take the Texas Registry Exam for certification.

Prerequisite
Immunizations: You must provide documentation of the following immunizations prior to registering for CNA. All immunizations must be current including: Tetanus-Diptheria Toxoid (Td) must have been administered within the last ten years, Measles (two doses), Rubella, Mumps, Completed Hepatitis B Series, and Varicella (chickenpox), as specified by the Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, Rule 97.64.

Criminal Background Check
The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services requires that student trainees have not been convicted of a criminal offense listed in Texas Health and Safety Code, 250.006.  You will be required to complete a background check in sufficient time for it to be reviewed by the college prior to your first day of class.   A background check typically takes 3 – 5 normal business days to complete.  Students are responsible for the cost of the background verification.  The background checks must be conducted by PreCheck, Inc., a firm specializing in background checks for healthcare workers. The cost of the background check  is $52.02 ($48.50 plus state tax of $3.52 for students living in Texas) and can be made securely online with a credit or debit card. You can also pay by money order, but that will delay processing your background check until the money order is received by mail at the PreCheck office. You will be provided an order confirmation number and instructions on how to check the status on the completion of your report by email.  When the background check is completed PreCheck will automatically send the results to the designated representative at FPC.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in emergency medical services.  This program prepares students for all levels of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certifications.  Students completing EMT-Basic certification are eligible to apply for certification by examination, from the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.  Students completing the first certificate may apply for EMT-Intermediate certification.  Students completing the second certificate may apply for EMT-Paramedic certification.

All courses are approved by the Texas Department of Health Services.  Students attending this class must complete the State of Texas immunization and must be 18 years of age by the time of completion of the first level EMT-Basic.
