PHLEBOTOMY

This class is the didactic and clinical portion of a program that leads to the ASCP examination of Phlebotomy Technician.  Phlebotomists are trained to draw blood samples by venipuncture, or arterial collection for medical tests and blood donations.  Phlebotomists must adhere to strict policies and procedures while treating the patient with care.  Length of clinical depends on individual scheduling and attendance.  Students attending this class must complete the State of Texas immunization requirements.    Students must also be 21 years of age or older to attend this class. 

MEDICATION AIDE COURSE

This course is a State approved course.  Students will learn the preparation and administration of designated medication and responsibilities associated with such administration.  Prerequisites: Must be employed in a long-term care facility, must be 18 years of age or older; must be free of communicable diseases and is suitable physically and emotionally health to administer medication; must have a high school diploma or GED.  Students attending this class must complete the State of Texas immunization requirements.

CPR AND FIRST AID

This course is offered for childcare personnel, foster parents, truck drivers, electricians, and those requiring infant, child, adult CPR and First Aid.  Topics include how to manage respiratory (choking and near drowning) and cardiac emergencies for infants, children and adults.  American Red Cross (ARC) guidelines are used.  An American Red Cross card is issued upon completion.  All courses will cover the new American Red Cross guidelines.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

Students will study the basic structure of medical words including prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, plurals, pronunciation, spelling and definitions of medical words.  An overview of select abbreviations and symbols, surgical and diagnostic procedures and pathological conditions will be addressed.  Emphasis is on building a professional vocabulary required for employment within the allied health field.

ANNUAL CHILDCARE AND DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

Designed for child care providers and benefits both directors and staff.  Training will include lunch, handouts and CEU certificate.  Co-sponsors, topics and instructors will be listed

NCLEX-PN

This is a three day review course for the new LVN’s who have successfully completed the LVN Program.  This review course is specifically planned to enhance the student’s ability to perform successfully on the NCLEX-PN.

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION

Teaches  fundamentals of transcription of medical data including medical terminology, ethical, and legal considerations, medical history and physical records, radiology, operative reports, pathology and discharge procedures.  Students use dictation equipment to transcribe medical data using a computer.  Basic computer and keyboard skills are required.

IV THERAPY

Designed to introduce the LVN and LVN student with the knowledge and skills necessary to start, maintain and trouble shoot IV Therapy for adult patients.  A skills application practice on manikin arms will be available.

CASE MANAGEMENT TRAINING

This certificate program is a six-week, 40 hour continuing education program for nurses, social workers and other health care professionals.  The program consists of six modules and each module includes reading assignments, study questions, case studies and test questions.  This program is designed for English-speaking nurses, social workers and other health care professionals who want to enhance or develop the knowledge and skills necessary for quality case management.

ALZHEIMER CARE TRAINING

The dementia care training program is based on the Alzheimer’s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations for Assisted Living Residence and Nursing Homes.  The training emphasizes person-centered care and stronger care teams while achieving bottom-line results for residents, staff and residence.  Sessions for supervisors and direct care staff build both individual and team skills.  Supervisors will learn how to motivate direct care staff to be skilled providers and problem solvers.
